Obernewtyn by Isobelle Carmody
The Obernewtyn Chronicles: Book One
“A thought-provoking tale of courage and sacrifice.” –Library Journal
“A Major work of fantastic imagination. Through the breadth of her vision, the depth of her characters, and the strength of her language, Carmody has creaded a world completely realized in all its details and completely persuasive.” –Lloyd Alexander
“A brave, multi-talented girl, her interesting friends, and animal characters with of their own-this book is a dream date for me.” –Tamora Pierce
For Elspeth Gordie freedom is-like so much else after the Great White- a memory.
It was a time known as the Age of Chaos. In a final explosive flash everything was destroyed. The few who survived banded together and formed a Council for protection. But people like Elspeth-mysteriously born with powerful mental abilities-are feared by the Council and hunted down like Animals… to be destroyed, burned at the stake, sent to a farm to work the rest of their lives, or sent to Obernewtyn. A place rumored to torture and experiment on those with the strange mental power.
Her only hope for survival is to keep her power hidden. But is secrecy enough against the terrible power of the Council?
No. No its not.
Obernewtyn is a wonderful book. I thoroughly enjoyed it. With a magic type ability Elspeth is a great heroine. It is a medieval book set in a post-apocalyptic world. The fear, dreariness of the world is painted perfectly in your mind, that wants you to keep coming back for more.
